The Welsh Food Alliance have written to the Welsh First Minister as follows:
“We welcome the reports second recommendation that food businesses should get to grips with food safety management based very clearly upon HACCP (Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points) principles in ensuring it is a core part of the way they run their business. Further, that additional resources should be made available to ensure that all food businesses in Wales intelligently use the HACCP approach and have in place an effective, documented, food safety management system which is embedded in working practice and culture.
Paragraph 18.12 of the report leaves it to the Welsh Assembly Government to determine, with others, what additional resource is required and how resources are best used to achieve desired outcomes. Once the Assembly Government has had an opportunity to consider the report, we would welcome an assurance that manager food safety certification should be required of all businesses and this should in effect be a license to trade, which should be renewed every three years.
Athough directed at the National Assembly for Wales who commissioned the Inquiry, these recommendations clearly apply to all parts of the UK. Will the Government in Wales be considering with the other UK countries the legislative opportunities to mandate manager food safety training to assist in implementing the reports recommendations?”
